Frequently Asked Questions

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathic Remedies are derived mostly from vegetable, animal and mineral sources. They are safe and do not interfere with any other medications. A Homeopathic Remedy, when prescribed and taken appropriately, has the power to gently restore health and vitality.

Homeopathy is the preferred choice of medicine by members of the Royal Family in England. Homeopathy is widely prescribed by physicians in Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

Homeopathy was established in Canada in the 1800s

Homeopathy has had a long, well-established presence in Canada since the 1800’s. The first recorded practicing Homeopath in Canada was Dr. J. 0. Rosenstein. He started his practice in 1845 in Montreal, Quebec (Epps,1845). Dr Joseph Lancaster was the first Homeopath to start a practice in Ontario in 1850. Dr. Lancaster also dedicated his time to establish Homeopathy as a recognized profession at that time. On May 4, 1859, the bill known as “An Act Respecting Homeopathy” was enacted and the Homeopathic Medical Board of Upper Canada was established (CSUC, 1859).*

Emily Stowe was Canada’s first female Homeopathic Doctor who founded Women’s College Hospital in Toronto. She was trained as a Homeopath at the New York Homeopathic Medical College for Women from which she graduated in 1867. Homeopathy was widely practiced in North America during the 19th century. Many doctors practiced Homeopathy as well as conventional medicine. At the turn of the century there were 20 Homeopathic Medical Colleges and more than 100 Homeopathic Hospitals in the United States and Canada.

Conflict with the American Medical Association (which is a private corporation) caused a decline in the practice of Homeopathy in North America early in the 20th century. However, it continued to be widely used in Europe, India and South America. In many European countries today, medical doctors study Homeopathy as a post graduate course.

What conditions or illnesses can be treated?

Homeopathy is able to help many chronic conditions such as gastritis, depression, allergies and more. It is also ideal for acute conditions especially colds, coughs, trauma, insect bites and more. Once a Homeopath meets with you and discusses all of your symptoms, a Homeopathic Remedy will be prescribed that will stimulate your body to heal itself.

Do homeopathic remedies interact with my physician's prescribed medications ?

Homeopathic Remedies act on your body’s ability to heal itself. Prescribed medications from your doctor act on your body’s physical properties. Since this is the case, remedies do not interfere with medications from your doctor and vice versa. Keep taking any medication as prescribed by your doctor until he she advises otherwise.

What can I expect during my first Homeopathic visit?

The initial visit is 1-1.5 hours long and includes extensive gathering of a patient’s history. Please bring all currently taken medications, including vitamins and herbals. Homeopathy is treating a patient and not the disease. Two people with the same diagnosis will not get the same homeopathic treatment — each treatment plan will be individualized according to the needs of each patient.

History of Homeopathy development in Canada

Homeopathy was founded by the German Physician Dr. Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843).  Dr. Hahnemann was a Medical Doctor who ran his own practice. He was disillusioned by the way medicine of that time was being conducted (bloodletting, purging, leeches and the use of toxic chemicals). He decided to close his practice and begin working as a chemist while translating medical texts. When Dr. Hahnemann began translating William Cullen’s Materia Medica into German he became fascinated with the South American tree-bark (Cinchona) because it was being used to treat malaria induced fever. In 1790, he began his first homeopathic experiment by ingesting a toxic amount of the bark. Dr. Hahnemann found that the bark produced symptoms in him (a healthy person) that were malaria-like and came to the conclusion that if a crude dose of a substance can create symptoms in a healthy person, an infinitesimal dose of the same substance can cure those very symptoms in a “sick” person. After translating Cullen’s work, Dr. Hahnemann spent the next six years experimenting on himself, his family and a growing group of followers. He wrote scientific papers on his findings and he was persecuted for his thoughts but the popularity of Homeopathic Medicine grew. Dr. Hahnemann kept meticulous records of his findings and together with his clinical trials developed a homeopathic clinical practice. Dr. Hahnemann successfully treated his patients for 50 years until his death in 1843.

Do Homeopathic remedies need to be taken forever?

After achieving desired results for your health, homeopathic remedies should be continued for up to six months then stopped. In certain cases we might continue treatment for a longer period of time, as each situation and patient are uniquely different from one case to another.

Are there any side effects from homeopathic remedies?

Any medicine that is not used as it has been prescribed by a Health Professional can lead to side effects whether it is conventional medicine or homeopathic medicine. Once prescribed, follow your Homeopath’s instructions on how to take a Homeopathic Remedy. It is not advisable to self medicate with Homeopathic Medicine. “The long-term benefit of homeopathy to the patient is that it not only alleviates the presenting symptoms but it reestablishes internal order at the deepest levels and thereby provides a lasting cure.”
